Before joining the ARITHMUS project, Stephan completed his PhD at the department of Political and International Studies of the Open University in Milton Keynes (UK). His doctoral thesis has been awarded the Michael Nicholson Prize of the British International Studies Association (BISA) in 2015. It investigates how migrants appropriate mobility in the context of biometric border controls in order to demonstrate the persistence of moments of autonomy of migration in technologically ever more sophisticated border regimes.
